A disastrous day for Wrexham as Brentford, without a manager and a goal in 520 minutes, staged a second half comeback to take a deserved three points back to West London.

On a cold afternoon in North Wales Wrexham made four changes for the visit of fellow strugglers Brentford. Neil Taylor, Sam Aiston, Mark Jones and Silvio Spann all returned to the starting line up as Brian Little shuffled his pack in an attempt to get back to winning ways after the defeat at Dagenham.

Brentford kicked off attacking the Kop end of the ground. A slow start to the game, but on four minutes Alan Connell went very close with a free kick on the edge of the area. It was the visitors who made the more positive start and Ryan Dickson went close with a header from eight yards out.

Wrexham won a free kick on seven minutes, Silvio Spann's free kick was cleared to the edge of the area and Mark Jones had an effort blocked. Wrexham started with a 3-4-3 formation, but Brian Little soon changed it, Aiston had started in a three man attack but dropped back into a left side midfield position with Wes Baynes playing on the right side in a standard 4-4-2.

In truth it was a scrappy opening to the game, but a good piece of target play by Neil Roberts chesting the ball down to Wes Baynes who fired in a good effort just over the bar on 14 minutes.

On 20 minutes, Steve Evans conceded a free kick on the edge of the area for a foul on Connell, Dickson took it quickly and went close with Anthony Williams struggling to get across.

Neither side was able to get hold of the ball in midfield, as such the football was of poor quality and the sparse crowd began to get frustrated. Wrexham were creating problems for themselves by giving the ball away in midfield positions and it took some good defending by Steve Evans and Richard Hope to rescue the Reds as Brentford broke away.

Shaun Pejic was booked for a foul on Ryan Dickson after 31 minutes and from the free kick Lee Thorpe rose unmarked and headed the ball against the Wrexham post, a lucky escape for the home side.

Wrexham were down to 10 men with Silvio Spann off injured, he was replaced by Robbie Garrett on 32 minutes. Wes Baynes was booked for a foul on the lively Dickson on 38 minutes, to be fair it looked accidental as the youngster chased back.

Wrexham took the lead on 40 minutes when Sam Aiston's cross found an unmarked Neil Roberts, the striker nodded it back across goal and Chris Llewellyn headed home.

Brentford bounced straight back and Dickson went down in the area after a challenge by Pejic, the referee pointed to the spot although the contact looked minimal.

Justice was done as Anthony Williams dived to his left and saved Lee Thorpe's penalty, a superb save by the Red's keeper. As the pace increased Karleigh Osborne was booked for a dreadful challenge on Robbie Garrett.

Chris Llewellyn should have increased the Wrexham lead on 44 minutes after being brilliantly set up by Neil Roberts, the Welsh international's finish was poor however. The play went back up the other end and Alan Connell headed over from close range. Connell was then booked after an aerial challenge with Richard Hope in the two minutes added time.

Second Half

No changes at half time and Wrexham kicked off attacking the Kop. Shaun Pejic was spoken to by the referee for another foul on Ryan Dickson surely a concern for Brian Little as he had already been booked.

It was a livelier start to the half by Wrexham but the play was still scrappy. A good break from Neil Taylor on 52 minutes saw him test Brown in the Brentford goal. Wrexham won a free kick from which Brentford conceded a corner from as Wrexham put the visitors under pressure.

Wrexham replaced Mark Jones with Matty Done on 54 minutes. It was a good return from injury for Jones. Neil Roberts dropped into midfield with Aiston, Llewellyn and Done forming a three up front again as Wrexham reverted to 3-4-3.

Brentford made their own change on 60 minutes with Ricky Shakes replacing Charlie Ide. The visitors were on top territorially at this stage as Wrexham tried to adapt to the new formation.

It was Wrexham, however, who nearly scored against the run of play, Chris Llewellyn chipping over from the edge of the area on 64 minutes after a good run from Sam Aiston.

Brentford did equalise on 65 minutes when substitute Ricky Shakes crossed and Alan Connell glanced home from 12 yards. This was their first goal in 585 minutes of football.

Darius Charles was booked on 70 minutes for handball. Then a complete disaster as Brentford broke away, Ricky Shakes missed the ball completely and with absolutely no danger confusion reigned and Steve Evans diverted the ball into the Wrexham net passed a stranded Anthony Williams - a real comedy of errors to give Brentford the lead.

Wrexham's confidence visibly drained and Brian Little reacted by replacing Shaun Pejic with Michael Proctor on 76 minutes. It proved too late as another disaster in the Wrexham area as the defence stood still and allowed Alan Connell to fire home from close range after his first effort hit the post.

Brentford replaced Gary Smith with Glenn Poole. Wrexham were in total disarray as Dickson put an effort just over the bar. The Red Dragons regained a little bit of composure and tried to reduce the deficit but the Brentford defence was well marshalled by Matt Heywood.

Neil Taylor became the third Wrexham player to be booked for a foul on Ricky Shakes.

In the four added minutes Wrexham pressed but despite putting Brentford under pressure they could not reduce the deficit although Sam Aiston should have scored when put in by Chris Llewellyn. The Wrexham players left the field to a chorus of boos once more from the hardy souls who had stayed until the bitter end.
