Two second half Jamie Day free kicks saw Peterborough United claim all three points and leave Wrexham in deep relegation trouble in an entertaining game at The Racecourse.
Brian Little was forced into one change in midfield with Silvio Spann coming in for the injured Danny Sonner for this vital game against Darren Ferguson's promotion chasing side.
On a dry, but chilly North Wales evening Peterborough kicked off attacking the ERS end of The Racecourse and were quickly on the offensive with early territorial advantage. The visiting forwards tested the Wrexham back three with their pace and Steve Evans had to be on his mettle to clear from Mackail- Smith.
Drewe Broughton had Wrexham's first chance on 6 minutes when Whitley's shot found him onside, he turned but Joe Lewis did well to narrow the angle and block the shot with his legs. Broughton, fresh back from his MK Dons penalty success last night should probably have done better.
Wrexham won their first corner soon after, taken by Silvio Spann it went across the area, Steve Evans couldn't turn however and it was scrambled clear. Drewe Broughton's height was causing the Peterborough defence some problems and another good flick put Stuart Nicholson into a good position, but the young striker couldn't control the ball.
With 11 minutes gone another Spann corner was headed clear to Jeff Whitley who fired an effort in well held by Lewis. Two minutes later Spann swung in a free kick from by the touchline, Lewis dropped it under pressure and it was cleared by a Peterborough defender. Wrexham were playing well at this stage, but needed a goal to capitalise on their advantage.
The first booking came on 17 minutes awarded to Keates for pulling back Silvio Spann. Wrexham survived a scare on 19 minutes when Steve Evans did well to block out Aaron McLean who picked up a header back into the area after a good cross from Day. Peterborough had weathered the Wrexham pressure and the game was evenly balanced at the mid point of the half. George Boyd then fired well over with a left foot effort on 22 minutes.
On 23 minutes, Gavin Ward completely missed a Day cross and with Mclean closing in Carl Tremarco miraculously cleared the ball from on his own line. A really lucky escape for the Wrexham goalkeeper! Darren Ferguson's side were getting on top and Wrexham did not help their own cause by some sloppy passing giving the ball back to the visitors.
A good move by Wrexham started with an excellent flick by Broughton to Chris Llewellyn, the Welsh international returned the ball quickly but Broughton was closed out by some good defending by Westwood as he ran into the area. The football was of a high quality from both sides as Wrexham matched their high flying opponents.
With half an hour gone Keates swung a corner in, it was headed clear to Gnakpa who fired a fierce drive just wide of Ward's post. Five minutes later McLean fired in an effort which Ward held easily. Peterborough were on top territorially at this stage and they were awarded a free kick thirty yards out on 37 minutes which resulted in Jamie Day firing well wide.
Steve Evans caused some concern with five minutes of the half left, receiving lengthy treatment in front of the Peterborough fans who were certainly not in a forgiving mood over the incident with Joe Lewis at London Road. The centre back returned to the action to a great cheer from the Reds fans in the Mold Road stand.
We went into three added minutes as Drewe Broughton beat Joe Lewis to a long ball and flicked it on, but unfortunately it fell harmlessly in the area and was cleared. Aaron Mclean put a header wide and this was the final action of a goalless first half.
Second Half
With no changes in personnel it was Wrexham who started the second half defending the Kop. Peterborough started the second half where they finished the first in the ascendancy but an error by Jamie Day let Simon Spender get clear down the right, his cross was cushioned with his head by Broughton but ran away for a goal kick.
Wrexham won a corner after 50 minutes, Spann hit it in low and Tremarco fired well over from twelve yards. The game was end to end but with only Broughton up front all too often Wrexham's attacks came to nothing as support was slow to arrive. A Spann free kick was glanced wide by Broughton; it must have taken a deflection as a corner was given from which Steve Evans forced Lewis into a good save low down by his post.
The Red Dragons we having a good spell of pressure around the hour mark and Steve Evans volleyed over from 12 yards as Peterborough defended stoutly.
The visitors had a corner of their own and as Ward punched clear, Llewellyn conceded a free kick on the edge of the area as he fought for the loose ball. Jamie Day took the free kick and bent it around the wall and into the bottom corner of Gavin Ward's net with 65 minutes gone.
Wrexham bounced back well and Simon Spender fired an effort well over on 68 minutes after a good spell of possession.
As Peterborough engaged in time wasting tactics Brian Little decided on a double change with Michael Proctor replacing Nicholson and Rob Duffy replacing Drewe Broughton after 76 minutes.
This gave him a change of formation with two up front. Peterborough replaced Mackail- Smith with Liam Hatch a minute later. Liam Hatch challenged Gavin Ward with his arm raised as he chased a ball into the area, for a moment as players ran to the incident there were echoes of the London Road brawl. The referee did well to control the situation and booked Hatch.
Liam Hatch then won a free kick on the edge of the area after Rob Duffy had conceded possession carelessly. With 80 minutes gone Jamie Day fired in a superb effort to put Peterborough two up. Paul Hall came on for Mike Williams as Wrexham switched to 4-4-2 in an effort to save the game.
Michael Proctor looked lively and offered some hope for Wrexham but it was Phil Bolland who fired wide with five minutes left. Darren Ferguson replaced Charlie Lee with Micah Hyde with 3 minutes left as he looked to run down the clock. Wrexham kept pressing but lacked the killer ball in the final third.
The assistant signalled three minutes added time but despite their efforts Wrexham couldn't score and their unbeaten run came to an end.
