Wrexham earned a second round berth for the second year running and over the 120 minutes thoroughly deserved to make progress, against a Vale side that were the stronger for the first hour but faded the longer the game went on.

With both Mark Jones and Eifion Williams suffering with knocks from the weekend, their replacements from Saturday, Levi Mackin and Matty Done, started at Vale Park. They were joined on the pitch by reserve keeper Michael Jones, who was given a rare first team outing, which will no doubt

The game got off to an explosive when after a minute Shane Tudor crossed from the right wing, Simon Spender headed it on, but Danny Whittaker recovered the ball for the home side at the far side of the box. He pulled a low cross back to the Luke Rodgers who saw his first shot blocked by Jones, but the rebound fell the former Shrewsbury Town striker and this time he hammered his effort against the keeper's right hand post.

Route One proved just that for Wrexham and the way to Port Vale's goal on 11 minutes. Danny Williams hit a high ball from the half way line, Michael Proctor let it bounce once inside the box before firing a low shot across keeper Joe Anyon and into the back of the net - as simple as that!

Moments later Done was one of three strikers who burst through the Vale back line but on the edge of the box he was tackled by George Pilkington as he prepared to shoot.

Wrexham were doing their best to push home their advantage at this stage, with the sparse home crowd not at all happy about what they were seeing from their favourites.

Chris Llewellyn could count himself luck on 17 minutes when he reacted to lading elbow by taking some revenge on Jason Talbot. The linesman flagged for the retaliation and with everyone expecting an early bath for the winger, the referee eventually settled for a caution!

Vale were regaining their composure after suffering that early set back and the Reds had to defend in numbers with first Levi Mackin heading off the line at a set piece and then Carrots watching on as a cross from Tudor landed on the top of his crossbar.

On 25 minutes, Calum Willock's pace took him passed Shaun Pejic on the left wing and his deep cross gave room for right winger Tudor to approach the Wrexham goal unnoticed, but his shot was widely off target and headed for the travelling fans gathered behind Michael Jones.

The Reds got back at Vale when Roberts headed down a long clearance for Llewellyn to gather the ball and from a central position hit a low 25-yard that had Anyon diving to his left to gather.

On 33 minutes a high ball down the middle saw Vale earn a penalty when Hope put his hands on Willock's shoulders as the pair jumped for the ball. Luke Rodgers stepped up and hammered home a shot into the corner of Jones' net, despite the keeper going the right way.

Not afraid to try his luck from distance, Danny Williams fired in a fierce effort from 30-yards, which while always going over at least gave the home defence something to think about.

In the secondminute of add time A Done run down the left saw the winger cross into the box for Llewellyn to send a header goal wards that Anyon was able to block. The keeper then launched the ball down field and midfielder Craig Rocastle beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with Michael Jones, but the Wrexham man kept his nerve as the attempted chip went straight at him.

Within 30 seconds of the restart, Tudor cut in off the wing, took a return pass from Rodgers before bursting into the box and firing a shot into the side netting which had the locals out of the seats thinking he had scored.

Another smart save by Jones saw him deny Rodgers on 49 minutes when the striker had used his pace to work the angle and fire a low shot that had plenty of venom in it.

The Dragons showed some fight on 55 minutes when Danny Williams made ground through the centre of the pitch and laid the ball into Proctor's path for the striker to connect well, but his effort was too close to Anyon and the keeper didn't have much difficulty in holding onto the shot.

Jones was called onto be alert after an hour when a deflected ball fell at the feet of Whittaker and the ex-Macc Lad sent in a first time shot that Carrots pushed away before gathering at the second attempt.

The introduction of Josh Johnson for Proctor on 74 minutes saw him cross deep to give Llewellyn a free header at the back post which Anyon blocked well, with the ball running back to the Wrexham man. He fired in a shot this time, which seemed to striker the outstretched hands of Jason Talbot, but despite the loud appeals Mr Boyeson was not impressed.

The home side made a change themselves, taking off Willock, who had enjoyed a decent first half, but fade after the interval, with Marc Richards. And 10 minutes from the end of normal time Marc Williams replaced Neil Roberts for the visitors.

Both managers were obviously eying extra time as former Red Paul Edwards was introduced for the impressive Robin Hulbert with just a few minutes of the 90 left and then in added time Conall Murtagh came on for Danny Williams.

Vale almost snatched it in injury time when the Reds only half cleared and Rodgers fired in a snap shot that Jones got his body behind.

After a few minutes break on the pitch, we headed into extra time on an increasingly a chilly and windy night at ValePark.

A by now youthful Wrexham side certainly showed plenty of willing with Johnson revelling at the opportunity of a run out. Then on 99 minutes a Done corner from the left dropped inside the six yard box and Marc Williams arrived late to meet the ball, but headed well over from close range.

The Reds were looking the more interested side in the extra 30 minutes, which was typified by Johnson again as he turned centre halfKeith Lowe and fired into the side netting from a tight angle.

A minute later Done drove to the goal line before firing over a low cross which the in rushing Marc Williams must have been only inches away from connecting with in front of a gapping goal.

The Welsh fans were on their feet urging the youngsters on as looked to exploited space in the home defence, with some entertaining football against their League 1 opponents.

Five flawless penalties from the Reds saw them through to the next round for the second year running, after Danny Whittaker struck a post for the home side - but on the night no more than Wrexham deserved after withstanding an early on slaught.
