Match Preview - Peterborough United
IT'S FA Cup time again and this season WREXHAM will have to overcome Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United in order to advance to the second round.
The Dragons ended their recent losing streak with a 0-0 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday night. Ryan Valentine had the chance to break the deadlock in the first half but his spot-kick was saved by 'keeper Frank Fielding, and home fans had to settle for one point instead of three.
Peterborough stretched their unbeaten run to five games as they defeated Dagenham and Redbridge 3-1 on Tuesday night. Paul Benson gave the Daggers a half-time lead, but Posh hit back through goals from Dean Keates and Aaron McLean (2).
This win pushed them up to third place in League Two, behind MK Dons and Hereford United. Their home form has been impressive so far this season, with Darren Ferguson's side losing just once in their eight games at London Road. This defeat came back in August when Chesterfield came away with a 3-2 victory.
The Dragons will have to be wary of Posh striker Aaron McLean, who is the club's top scorer so far this season. McLean has found the net eleven times in all competitions, and is second only to Chesterfield's Jack Lester in the League Two scoring chart.
Both sides will hope to match their efforts in the cup last year, with both Posh and the Dragons reaching the third round. Wrexham opened up with a 1-0 victory over Conference side Stevenage Borough, thanks to a first half goal from Danny Williams.
Few would have given the Dragons a chance in the next round against Scunthorpe United, who were flying high in League One. However thanks to goals from Kevin Smith and Mark Jones, the Dragons made it into the hat for the third round draw.
Just under 3,000 fans made the trip to Pride Park as Wrexham faced Championship side Derby County, but there was no shock this time as an Arturo Lupoli hat-trick sent the Dragons out of the cup, Lee McEvilly getting a consolation goal.
Posh also made it to the third round and were only defeated in a replay away to Plymouth Argyle. After impressive victories in the previous rounds against Rotherham United and Tranmere Rovers, Posh held Argyle to a 1-1 draw at London Road. Despite going ahead in the replay thanks to an Aaron McLean strike, Argyle advanced to the next round after goals from Barry Hayles and David Norris.
Last Time Out
Posh eased to victory in the last meeting between the sides, running out 3-0 winners at London Road. Goals from Aaron McLean, George Boyd and Steve Evans (og) did the damage.
Earlier in the season the sides battled out a 0-0 draw at the Racecourse. Chris Llewellyn had the best chance to break the deadlock, but he could only hit the bar when through on goal.
