Disappointment for the Reds as a second half strike from Matthew Brown on 61 minutes was enough to separate the two sides at the Racecourse.
The first half saw little in the way of excitement, but after the Cumbrians took the lead it became one-way traffic as United keeper Grant Carson pulled off a number of saves to deny the home side.
Mark Stewart was in great from for Wrexham, testing the keeper from all angles and then finally being denied three minutes from the end when his curling effort came back off the crossbar.
Paul Williams moved in on the loose ball, netting from close range, but he too was denied, this time by the raised flag of an assistant referee.
Deep into the four minutes of added time indicated, Steve Weaver told his keeper Vinnie Whelan to go forward for a corner, but in a pushing match with Carson tempers flared and a mass brawl ensued.
When the dust had settled, the officials confered and the outcome was as a red card for Whelan to add to the night of woe.
