Match Preview - Rochdale
AFTER the encouraging display against local rivals Chester City last week, WREXHAM will hope to take more than one point this weekend as they take on Rochdale this Saturday (3.00pm).
Fans saw a new-look Wrexham side last week, with Brian Little including youngsters Neil Taylor and Wes Baynes in his side, as well as moving captain Neil Roberts into a midfield role alongside loan signing Sam Aiston.
Despite gaining a point from the game, Wrexham stay bottom of League Two, one point behind Lincoln City and Mansfield Town.
Wrexham face Rochdale this weekend due to both sides being knocked out of the FA Cup First Round. The fixture was originally scheduled for 8th September, but was postponed due to international call-ups for a number of Wrexham players.
Dale currently lie in 14th position in League Two, after a mixed bag of results this season. Last week they defeated Mansfield Town 1-0, thanks to a goal from former Dragons' striker Lee McEvilly.
'Evil' has rejoined Rochdale after an unsuccessful start to his second spell at Accrington Stanley, where he had started just three games in the early stages of the season. McEvilly scored 25 goals in 85 league games in his last spell at Dale, which lasted from 2001-2004.
Keith Hill's side have won three out of eight home league games this season. The first of these came against league leaders MK Dons, where they staged a remarkable late comeback scoring twice in injury time to win the game 3-2! Since then they have also beaten Dagenham and Redbridge 1-0, as well as last week's win against Mansfield.
Some of Wrexham's fringe players will be pushing for a start on Saturday after an impressive performance at Morecambe on Wednesday night. Marc Williams bagged a hat-trick for the reserve side, which also featured Ryan Valentine, Mike Williams, Matty Crowell, Josh Johnson and Conall Murtagh.
Last Time Out
Wrexham travelled to Spotland on Boxing Day last year and somehow gained just one point after throwing away a 2-0 lead. Goals from McEvilly and Llewellyn just after half time put the Dragons into a commanding lead, but Rochdale salvaged a point after Glenn Murray and John Doolan found the net.
Earlier in the season Rochdale took the points from the encounter at the Racecourse. Chris Llewellyn's early goal gave the home side a half time lead, but Dale were a different side after the break. Chris Dagnall scored twice in the second half to give the away side a deserved victory.
