WHILE happy at winning through a tough Carling Cup first round tie at Port Vale, manager Brian Carey was quick to play down any over-celebrations at the result:

"This was a tough game throughout and I think we have to say they shaded things in terms of chances.

"But I thought for the first 20-25 minutes we were good value for money, but then we started to do things we shouldn't have.

"At half time we go back together and pushed them close in the second half - in the end I was delighted with the outcome.

"We looked dangerous on the break, which we were pleased about. Josh came on and caused them problems with his pace, while the likes of Doney were in good form.

"With one eye on Saturday's league game against Morecambe, we brought on all three substitutes, but now we have squad which is capable of coping with that.

"While they were young lads coming on, I'm also mindful of what they can do and they did a good job for us tonight.

"Also in the starting line-up were Levi Mackin and Michael Jones, which was good for them and they have come through a big game like this, which is encouraging for them. The pair will only benefit from the full 120 minutes and then the penalty shoot-out.

"We have placed a great deal of emphasis on fitness during pre-season and I think we had a quick return on that tonight, as I was very pleased in the way we finished the game.

"As for the penalties, fair play to the lads who took them. Good composure from everybody and the whole team is thrilled with the result.

"We do though have to keep this in perspective, as you will remember this time last year we went to Sheffield Wednesday and won convincingly and then look what happened after that!

"This is one good result, which we are very pleased about, but we have another big game on Saturday."
