Brian: I Think That We Should Have Got A Result
Wrexham produced a far better performance than the recent home game against Rochdale but unfortunately, Stockport County substitute Anthony Elding was in the right place at the right time to nudge home the only goal of the game during the second half. To compound matters, Ryan Valentine saw his late penalty for the Dragons saved by Conrad Logan after referee Mr Beeby had given the kick following a handball on hte edge of the area.
Like most spectators, Brian Little thought that it was a gamea that we should have won, "I think that we should have got a result today but that is the first time that I have been able to say that for a while.
"Obviously I'm very disappointed because I think that we could have won. We had a great chance at the start of the second half and we've missed a penalty obviously, and the goal that we conceded was in one of those infamous five minute mad spells that we have. I think young Wes made a mistake on the edge of the box and then for five minutes we were all over the place. For the rest of the game we were okay, Stockport have done okay but we held them. From the sidelines you get bitter and twisted, I don't know why! All of a sudden we have made a mistake and we don't know how to put it right but really there was nothing to put right because at the time it was still 0-0.
"The goal today was a disappointment to me based on the fact that I think that we were okay, and then we role our sleeves up again and have another go.
"Today it was better because I can stand here and say that we should have got something out of the game which has now always been the case.
"I think that more often than not Neil would have scored with this header early in the second half, he's only two or three yards out maximum really but I think that the wind might have held the ball up slightly and he didn't get the power on the header that he would have got. It has just sort of cushioned off his head but it was still a good save by the goalkeeper. If you had ten of them in the same position, then you would certainly put nine of them away so it was disappointing.
"We said at half-time that we will get a chance and if we win one-nil that is great. Today it was about grinding out a result, and we have almost done that, and it was a massive disappointment because for the first time for a while I think that we should have got something out of it, which we haven't.
"We have swopped the dressing rooms around as logistically that is the best thing for me to do. I have got my office down there, we have got the treatment room down there and it is a big dressing room down here which everyone can get into before the game. I have got a room that the players can go in, a room that my staff can go in and a room for the physio so it means that I am more organised.
"We are in a massive corridor where everyone gathers outside and too often I feel that we are not focussed on the game. Our performance today showed that we were more focussed and I have been able to organise my staff better so they know exactly what to do.
"Five weeks into the job or whatever it is, there are so many things that I look at now that I am aware of that I am now trying to implement changes too. It has taken me a little bit of time to get to know people and today was the start of something which I hoped would have been a great result, I genuinely felt that we could win today and am very, very disappointed that we didn't win today, more so than the other games because we did enough today to get a result.
"I have to try and change things, probably as much as I can. We have the basis of some good players here and I felt for Ryan especially today as I've asked him to do a job which he has done, and then he steps up and misses the penalty which spoils his day. His performance was good today, he settled us down in the middle of the park and is a bit of a calm character who has been around a bit and who knows the game. Putting him in midfield made a difference for us today.
"I told them today if it finished 0-0 don't be embarrassed because we needed to get at least a point and that was the most important thing today. I am absolutely gutted that we haven't because we've had the two best chances. We might even have had three because Sam had a right lash at the ball in the area in the first half and the one goal that they have scored is poor, it is an awful goal. It was the end of the five minute spell where from the sidelines I am trying to tell people just to calm down, and to relax, and to not panic.
"You have to say that penalty was a miss. The goalkeeper would always say that it was a good save but it is difficult to criticise Ryan. I understand at the end of last season he stepped up and took a penalty which I was the most important penalty the club has had for a long time. To be fair, he has stood up again and had a go but if you get a penalty you should score more often than not."
