Brian: We Have Had To Score Four To Win!
WHILE it was good to sign off from The Football League with a win, manager Brian Little was still being level headed following a 4-2 success at Lincoln City on the final day of the season.
"Yes, it's a high note, but what about the goals we have conceded!" he said.
"Crikey, we have had to score four to win a football match. At two-nil up, you think lets go on and win the game, but we once again we give away the craziest goals.
"I finish games now shattered, as you try and kick every ball for them, especially the younger lads over these last few weeks. I said to them, that I got us two free kicks by appealing to the referee, its little things like that which they have to do.
"We are very naive, but we have had to throw them into a situation that not even a seasoned pro wants to have to deal with.
"They won a very good game against Notts County, then had to go in against Hereford and got the almighty kick up the backside, which showed them what the game is about. They have had to stomach relegation and today it's good for them to come here and win a game away from home.
"So in a very short space of time they have won a home game and an away game, which is a lot quicker than the so called first teamers managed this season.
"I'm pleased for them, they are honest and from what we saw out there, then a few of them will be an asset to us over the next few years, but some will go on to make careers elsewhere, but I think it has been a great exercise for us over that last few weeks.
"I would like to say thanks to all the players, including the ones we have released. Ultimately they might not have been good enough, but as I have said before, none of them were bad people, I wish them well.
"The fans have been fantastic, even if a few got carried away by running on the pitch today.
"You can see what it means to people when a team comes away and wins a football match - there is just a great lesson for our young players. Winning football matches is what it's all about.
"How you win doesn't really matter!
"We have a few people out there who learnt a great deal today. The likes of Wes Baynes, who from day one I could see had so much ability, but he has to learn about the game. Once he does that, then he's going to be a good player.
"Carl Tremarco coming back into the side makes such a difference to us. A solid left back is very important, while Spends did a decent job on the other side with Wes protecting him.
"So there are things for us to build on, while we still need an influx of new players. The coming months will be very important to us, we have an awful lot of work ahead of us and we have to do that well. It's an important phase of the club's future.
"Wes should score goals, as he strikes the ball as well anybody!
"You put the ball on the edge of the box and I just shout from the sidelines for him to have a go.
"I actually shouted for him to shoot from the kick-off, especially with the wind behind him. People laugh at me, but if he has that sort of guts and believe in himself then why not.
"Okay it's an over exaggeration of what he should do, but if he has that desire and learns what he has got in himself, then he can go on.
"I also have to say that coming out of the pack, Levi has been a massive boost to us and played really well in his four games. So maybe sending him out on loan, to what will be the league we are heading into, has done him the world of good.
"There are others, but today those two have done their bit by getting involved with the goalscoring.
"There is a nucleus of young talent here, but overall we still have an awful out of things to work on, without a doubt.
"Yes there are a few positives, but we haven't got a shed load of them - that's for sure.
"We have to be honest and be fair, we have to look at things and just because we have got a result today, I won't be getting carried away.
"A win is a great tonic for everybody, but I was at Burton v Cambridge last night and those two teams are miles better than us.
"The top six in that league, at this moment, we have to say are better teams than us.
"So through the summer we have to build a team that will be competitive with them, before we can really talk about positives.
"A lot of work to do, but I would defy anyone to say I was wrong in stating that the top six clubs in the Blue Square couldn't hold their own in League 2 - that in itself is saying that they are a lot better then us.
"We really have to work hard, make good decisions and get a spirit inside the club which is second to none to give ourselves a chance."
