Danny WilliamsA half decent Reserve side took on Manchester United at their Ewan Fields home on Tuesday night and almost pulled off the shock of the Pontin's League season, as they forged into a second half lead, only to have victory snatched away from them following Phil Marsh's double whammy with less than 15 minutes remaining.

With long term injury victims Danny Williams, Dean Bennett and Alex Smith all re-introduced to competitive action, the travelling Welsh supporters were delighted to see all three more than play their part in one of our best Pontin's League displays of the season.

After a promising start, when the visitors pinned back their hosts, with Chris Armstrong and Jamie Reed looking dangerous, we suddenly found ourselves trailing to David Bellion's 18th minute penalty. The Frenchman winning the spot kick in the first place, when going over Kieran Quinn's challenge on the edge of the box following a left wing corner.

Bellion stepped forward to fire a low shot into the corner of the net, despite Ryan Harrison going the right way.

This goal lifted United and it was to take something special to pull the Dragons level as the league leaders began to turn on the style.

That moment came on 34 minutes, when Alex Smith floated over a cross from the right and up stepped American trialist Mike Werle to head an equaliser that few goalkeepers would ever have stopped.

Going into the interval all-square, Joey Jones urged his team forward and it was a sweeping move that began on the left, but switched to the right on 56 minutes which saw a second goal for Wrexham.

Armstrong helped the ball over to Bennett and the winger's low shot was met at the back post by defender Paul McShane, who under extreme pressure from Reed, bundle the ball into his own net from close range.

Just as another shock defeat seemed set to dent United's title hopes and hand second-placed Blackpool a lifeline, striker Phil Marsh intervened.

On 76 minutes, he tapped home after a fine run and pull-back from Bellion down the right.

Then, almost immediately, he fired home a superb goal from Kleberson's fine pass to keep daylight between United and the Seasiders in their struggle for the title.

It was an unfair on Wrexham, who had more than contributed their part to an entertaining match and belied their lowly position in the league table.
